ROLLER CHAIN
Chain drive is the most common power transmission device used in machines of industry and transportation. Without it we would still be using gears and shafts.
Though Hans Renold is credited with inventing the roller chain in 1880, sketches by Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century show a chain with a roller bearing.
Hans Renold Limited was formed as a private limited company in 1903. It merged with The Coventry Chain Company Limited and was registered as a public limited company named Renold and Coventry Chain Company Limited in 1930. It was renamed Renold Ltd. in 1967, and later became Renold PLC. Nowadays the company still bears his name.
Renolds still produces quality motorcycle drive chain in several European countries. Germany and France being the primary sources of chain we stock in the blue boxes. These are ordered in large spools and cut to several lengths by the English vendor.
While the size chart below is helpful it lacks on of the most important dimensions on a British bike. The outside width and pin width are critical on some applications (Triumph final drive). All chain we sell is non-Oring type as the Oring type is too wide to clear the primary case. Keep this in mind if you are using our chart and ordering chain from another source.
Chain Sizes are normally called out by dimensions WIDTH X PITCH IE: 3/8 x 5/8 = 530
